James Michael Forrest, aka ‘Mountain Man’

A lot of James Michael Forrest’s life now is spent hiking in the hills all over the UK, making notes for travel articles and planning new adventures. Quite a contrast to five years ago.

Back then, James had an office job, lived in Birmingham and only went on the odd stroll at the weekend.

He admits that he wasn’t happy with life and decided to make some pretty drastic changes.

He quit his job, sold his house and car, went travelling and volunteered on a farm in the Lake District.

He then challenged himself to hike all the mountains in England and Wales – 446 in total – in six months.

Completing this challenge led to a book deal, and articles in the national press. It also led to his next adventure – climbing all 273 mountains in Ireland.

He’s had quite a journey!

It was a beautiful, sunny day when I met James on a hill overlooking Kendal to record this podcast. I wanted to find out why he wanted to make his life more adventurous, why the outdoors had to become a bigger part of his life, how he made the changes, and how it has impacted his life.

Did it affect his friendships, family and finances? Is he happier? Was it all worth it?

James had some brilliant tales from his mountain adventures, and great tips for others about how to make life more adventurous. He broke it down into simple steps, that made it seem far less intimidating.

I hope you enjoy the podcast, and listen out for the moment we were interrupted by a group of llamas! I’m not joking!
